Quick Tip – Sharing on LinkedIn
Keeping your network active – Issue #32
I often refer to the physics of a flywheel when I talk about putting energy into your network. A flywheel needs a great deal of force to get it moving. However, once it is spinning, it stores kinetic energy so that it keeps on spinning for a long time.
Basically, it smooths the output to be consistent even when the energy put into the system is intermittent.
However, we tend to let our network activity die down once we start a new job. In other words, that flywheel slowly comes to a stop. Yet, we expect that very network to light up and help us when we need to look for a new job.
It doesn’t work that way.
I know that when you’re busy with your day job you may not have a lot of time to spend on LinkedIn, for example. But, it doesn’t take a lot of time to put some energy into that “network activity flywheel” to keep the momentum going.
One quick way to stay active is to simply share an article, blog post, or a short thought once a week. That’s it.
Post something to the LinkedIn feed with a couple of sentences that capture your thoughts on the topic. It shouldn’t take more than five minutes to share something interesting that you already came across in your favorite news feed or newsletter. Hint: you could share one of the public posts from Invincible Career.
Doing this keeps your name fresh in the feed so that people will think of you when an opportunity comes up. Also, when people look at your profile (e.g., recruiters, hiring managers), you’ll seem like an active expert in your profession.
When people like and share your content, you may also acquire more followers and connections. This is all good.
Put some energy into your network flywheel this week!
